Do you think the First Nations would accept a quickie consultation, built to meet the October schedule? I don’t, so I see that path diverting to another injunction.
Would you accept a quickie consultation. UCP like do fast track consultation. No debate or very little. Prior consultation need to be done prior to decisions
Danielle Smith is fighting for her political survival. We knew she was a separatist all along, no matter how much Danielle Smith tries to deny it. Appealing the judge's ruling confirmed it even more. The separatists are giving Danielle Smith her marching orders. Either she complies, or they dump her. The UCP are also separatists. Why aren't any of the UCP MLAs talking about the major data leak? It's their political survival at stake too.
But... Putting the Forever Canada question on the ballot seems exceedingly unlikely to me. Smith has been exerting herself very hard to pretend that neither that petition nor Thomas Lukaszuk exist. Using the question will elevate one of her biggest critics and will do nothing at all to appease the seppies; in fact it may well enrage them. I don't see how it benefits her.
Keep the hand written charm. Too much automation gets us in trouble…just look to the data breach. If it had been paper lists handed out, to be recopied by HAND, look how much easier it would have been to trace! Snarkiness aside, I do love my technology for writing and reading. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for this Lisa. re the Forever Canada question. Please correct me but I think we are still waiting for the Select Committee report on this initiative (referred on March 10). The Assembly adjourned on May 14 and is not scheduled to convene again until October 27. But perhaps we'll have a special session to accommodate tabling of the report under s 15 of the CIA? or perhaps the Premier will have another work around?
A colleague sent me this excerpt from the Standing orders last week: ‘Committee operation 54(1) A standing committee or special committee may, without leave of the Assembly, sit during a period when the Assembly is adjourned. (2) A standing committee or special committee may elect one of its members to be Deputy Chair if none has been appointed by the Assembly.’
I agree that it can still sit (see Hansard March 10 for the resolution establishing the committee) but I think that its report can only be tabled if the Legislature is in session.
Isn't the usual practice to wait until the last minute then produce some badly written legislation that doesn't accomplish what they want it to accomplish?
However, take a group of highly motivated and well organized individuals + plus a system where anyone can get a membership for cheap and you have a scenario where a party is taken over and those who find themselves on the “wrong” side of an issue are summarily pushed out.
Wait. Where have I seen that before? Oh yeah. America. Trump. MAGA. Republicans.
Canada is a free country, People living here who do not like it can leave. No one is stopping them, in fact they should be encouraged to leave to see if the grass is greener on the other side but Canada’s borders stay intact. First Nations treaties are to be honoured. They agreed to « share » the land. They did not agree to relinquish it. Too bad so many folks do not understand that. No other country should get our land because of an antisocial (now criminal group for stealing electoral data) group who do not seem to understand the world does not revolve around them. They are free to relinquish their Canadian citizenship and relocate to a different country. They seem to like Texas …. head there. It is like Americans who are fed up with the US. They are leaving the US to come to Canada and Europe. They are not taking land with them.
Spare me your "30%" talk, when that 30% drops to 20% in the same conversation if the surveyed person hears mention of passports and currency.
Carney hasn't dignified the "threat" of separation with actual engagement. That would look like this:
"To the Alberta Separatists: I've talked to Canadians all over the country, and their understanding of your cause is very emotional. There would be great offense taken, great anger. You can completely forget about Canadian passports, Canadian bank accounts: all your money would be in a foreign currency, the next day. Canadians would not let the government of Canada do anything else. And I would be curious how many of you think that you could remain independent from the United States - and how many of you are only doing this because you would welcome them."
I think your 30% would drop below 20% the next day. And the "knife at the throat" would turn into a nerf ball.
Smith doesn't want any kind of vote, positive or negative. She wants talk *about* a vote, for the subject to be discussed, vaguely and generally, with no specifics like the two points above.
She will dodge any kind of commitment to specifics.
I appreciate the clearance that the Forever Canada question offers. It is direct, clear, and a yes response is clear for the majority of us.
I agree w/ previous comment on why preemie may be unlikely to use it due to its origin.
One additional thought is that the wording of all other proposed Qs seeks an affirmative response from hardcore seppies and seppie-adjacent folks. If seppies & the adjacent folks have to deviate to a single ‘no’ it presents challenges for seppies/ UCP. For example, it eliminates the simplicity of a seppies “just say yes” approach to all referendum Qs.
I suspect the Government of Alberta will allow the separatist referendum to go ahead. It seems to me that the real threat to Treaties comes only on the implementation of separation - should the separation side win.
Therein lies the issue though … why offer a referendum when everyone knows the First Nations are not going to relinquish their land. It is dead in the water before it even gets to referendum. Having a referendum will not change their stand so it is yet another pressure point with no value except to elevate anger.
Perhaps this whole referendum thing is a ruse, a plot to get folks into a 'much ado abour nothing' mindset so that the book of scandals of all sorts are basically forgotten. When was the last time we heard anything about the Tylenol, the AHS issue with the law suit and it seems that daily there are other things that are scandalous happening. Changing rules, regulations and yes LAWS to foster the UCP/TBA/APP/MAGA program to destroy the province while enriching the bosses down in Houston and Dallas corporate oiligarchy offices. This issue has taken on a life all its own and it seems sadly that the real issues of governance or lack thereof have been given shortshrift.
A separatist referendum is not a « much ado about nothing ». I was transferred to Alberta from Quebec due to separatist referendum. A separatist referendum has serious consequences re corporate exodus, investment dies, mass moves affecting real estate values, unemployment rises, tax base affected due to exodus, etc. No one in their right mind decides to have a separatist referendum as consequences are a huge financial hit.
“Shroedinger’s Premier”😂😂😂
Both dead and undead at the same time.
But, in my estimation, dead to most Albertans.
Do you think the First Nations would accept a quickie consultation, built to meet the October schedule? I don’t, so I see that path diverting to another injunction.
Good point

Enjoying the proliferation of the term seppie
Lisa, I appreciate your optimism.

At least it's never boring in good old hillbilly Alberta!
Thanks for the flow chart. They have been missed!
What a great flowchart! And I laughed at the description of Danielle Smith as Schódinger’s Premier. That she is, for sure. Loved this!

Ah, interesting. Maybe she puts the question on as government sponsored?

I don’t believe all UCP members are separatists.

QED.
As long as the UPC MLAs don’t speak up against separation we have to assume they are separatists.
I think Alberta below Red Deer should join the USA ( if the First Nations agree) the rest stays in Canada

How about no.
What you think doesn't matter.
Spare me your "30%" talk, when that 30% drops to 20% in the same conversation if the surveyed person hears mention of passports and currency.

This rings true

Agreed. I'm not in favor of it, believe me!
The most unlikely: plot twist. Y'all, what other reason is there to retreat to Irving, Texas?
