I expect the PM to reach out to other countries and try to open doors for Canadian businesses. The USA is an erratic trade partner and new prospects need to be developed. Relations between Canada and India should be better given our Indian Population. Sharing military procurement with Australia makes sense. Mexico is a big economy near us and our free trade with Mexico is in tact. These are very strategic moves that are good for Canada.
I've read a few things on this idea that we're entering some security pact with the US and it seems it's a lot of BullCrap. MBS declined... why? He does have an arrest warrant maybe that's why? Modi? Maybe we have evidence against Modi that allows Canada to arrest him for his Assassination of Canadian citizens? There are many other scenarios that come to mund as well that even more feasible that the one you are talking about or that I just mentioned. Maybe people need to calm there asses down and see what plays out before jumping to conclusions
This strikes me as a lot of sparsely evidenced cynical conjecture. Whether we want to be or not, Canada exists only in relation to other nations, so doesn’t getting people together - even if there are vast differences or disagreements between parties - at least make it possible for relational progress to be made? Perhaps I misread your article but it seems like you’d be in support of trying to solve problems by simply disinviting those you don’t like, which I think would solve nothing.
The Trump regime is replacing America’s democratic republic with an early-stage police state. If the people continue to ignore or excuse his behaviour, they'll suffer the consequences and Trump will literally get away with murder. Normalizing his behaviour is the biggest mistake Americans have continuously made over the years. ("Oh that's just Trump being Trump.") If Canadians ignore or excuse his behaviour, he'll have his way with us too. Can't wait to see what plays out at protest rallies across American states tomorrow. Maybe sympathetic Canadians will protest north of the 49th!
With the arrest of a California Senator , US military and National Guards deployed to a US state, and threats to Governor Newsom in the past days, their democracy is more than threatened just because of Trumps personal feelings for the state’s democratic policies. Project 2025 at work. There is no way in hell he should even BE here. Too bad they bear proofed Kananaskis, just sayin.
Giving Americans “right of first refusal” on Canadian resources, including rare earth minerals is a dangerous slippery slope.Return:no tariffs that are illegal in the first place
1st Refusal on materials or on buying companies? Sell out!
Dr. Young: A compelling take on the G7 meeting. However, when citing The Economist, consider the source. It was founded by the British millers and brewers, with a push from the emerging business class. The magazine’s goal was to end the Corn Laws** and spread the ideology of the market. The Corn Laws were designed to make sure Britain enjoyed food sovereignty. When they were repealed, grain prices for locally grown wheat and other food staples collapsed, pushing agricultural workers into cities, and even inconveniencing the landed aristocracy for a time. Given its heritage, The Economist’s reports may be more aspirational than factual.
Isn’t Canada’s history and existence all about “pluck defeating geography?” We have a long history of defending our national interests, often against the wishes of the US. Post 1945 Canadian wheat sales to Russia and China in the face of US food embargoes, or our reluctance to spend our blood and treasure in Viet Nam or Iraq come to mind.
Canada still has options, including reopening relations with China and the BRICS nations with whom we once had good connections before Harper and Trudeau the younger. How about an auto-pact with China? And let’s not forget that the US mid-west runs on diesel and gasoline refined from Alberta’s heavy sour crude oil. The G7 is not the whole world and perhaps the Prime Minister actually recognizes this.
** back in the day “corn” referred to wheat. Bread made from wheat was referred to as “cake,” as in “let them eat cake,” and barley-corn was what beer was brewed from. Confused yet?
Anyone who asks me which not many here in rural Alberta, I just say: give him time and he will self destruct. Musk is Phase 1, phase2 is tariffs when prices rise, and phase three may be the Supreme Court pulling in the reins but given their court appointments are political based, probably unlikely. That and protests. When a Florida Sheriff says : protest and we will kill you would really set the US on fire
UPDATE: An on-the-ball reader has pointed out that the Economist has taken the article that prompted this post down from its website.
Jen Gerson conjectures that The Economist got spun by the Americans. Seems plausible!

I would love to believe this, but I fear you will be disappointed. There is zero chance that Modi will be arrested if he attends the summit.
Pluck can defeat geography--just look at Ukraine.
What kind of nonsense is this? We will trade with the elephant, but we ain't stroking the trunk.

Too funny

Does the Orange Menace belong in handcuffs? I'd say so.
Lots of room for expanding trade especially with Eastern and Southern Asia.

I love the movie script. Too bad it's true. I don't understand what Carney doesn't get about the orange clown.
