Excellent column Lisa!! What a thought.... instead of blaming others we should tend our own house first....

Sure but remember that old feminist phrase...F....housework.

Seems to have caught on to a greater extent than any of us perhaps intended.

Yet another initiative to distract the electorate and pander to the UCP base. So sad and such a waste of time. How about using the so called 'star chamber' to work on facilitating solutions to real problems - such as chronic under investment in Health Care infrastructure? Thanks for posting, I love your substack!

Hope Nenshi and the NDP will nominate candidates NOW so they can host local actions, townhalls and respond to media.

Putting aside the obvious illegality of this white supremacist rubbish, what immigrants are they talking about if they're not citizens or permanent residents? Asylum applicants? What? Are they seriously claiming these are the cause of the housing shortage or unemployment?

Thank you Dr. Lisa Young for your insightful comments. Let’s hope that Albertans won’t get fooled by the UCP’s latest distraction tactic.

Let's hope, more Albertans are learning; for example, Three Hills area voted the UCP in the by-election. They evidently, can't see the bull Dani is pushing.

Could someone somewhere please explain to the Premier and the majority of Albertans what exactly a “tanker ban” is. You can quote the legislation if that’s easier.

Excellent column! Amazing how the same people who are all about resilience, self-reliance, and toughness are so completely willing to believe that all of the province's problems are caused by somebody else (i.e., "the feds"). Of course, it didn't end well for the last Premier who dared say "look in a mirror"

That is the problem in a nutshell......we are all part of the problem, if we live in Alberta.

I doubt those on the right are any more prickly than many on the 'other side'.........I hesitate to use the term 'left' for Albertans.......

We've all grown up with an outsized view of our entitlements.......and a bit of a deficit when it comes to stepping up, speaking up, or donating much of anything to the future.

But when we do look in that mirror....it's hard to fault Jimmy Prentice for his good advice.

PS. What really did Prentice in was his remark to Rachel during the debate.

When he said disparagingly to her "Math is hard".....his goose was cooked.

Patriarchs need to learn to watch their mouth......when on public television....turns out, women are listening.

Something we all need to get better at.

The one great thing about all of the infuriating rhetoric spewing from our "beloved" government like a leak in a tailings pond is that it's really giving those of us who've been belligerently shouted over for years a reason to be proud Albertan federalists (thank you, Jared Wesley). Because we all know Albertans love to have something to be pissed off about! 😂

Counting our blessings would make more sense.......but then, being thankful is such a useless attitude, when it comes to the politics of resentment.

Bingo Lisa. Maybe we could start with a referendum question under the governments initiative legislation that would force a citizens assembly on provincial electoral reform. I am tired of not being represented by these nut bars. Next we could tackle legislative reform ( I defer to Andrew Coyne’s new book). Then lets get rid of a government fully captured by the oil and gas industry, from the lobbyist Premier herself to the regulator.

As you suggest a parallel panel that actually addresses the long term problems we face in Alberta caused by a combined focus of grievance and a faux sense of exceptionalism that some Albertans seem to share. This distills into an odd sense of entitlement that ignores the dream that Peter Lougheed had for our resources where we act as owners, not peasants reduced to cap in hand politics built on corporate greed and the boom and bust economy.

Not to mention major foreign ownership of our so called 'economic engine'

I'm still trying to figure out how building bitumen pipes everywhichwhere would distance Canada from American influence??

It just may be that a corollory of entitlement is a growing stupidity that eats away at us like a benign tumor.

I agree with both the tone and the content of your post.

Ms. Smith and her colleagues are engaged in a project of manipulation and self interest. At the end of the summer, all we will hear is how many Albertans support the need to have our own pension plan, police force and why we need to vigorously fight the feds.

What a meaningless and farcical activity!

These incompetents need to be replaced.

I have decided to start a new political entity in Alberta. It will address the various aspects of the ever-present threat to bale from Canada that has been a staple in this province for the last half-century. It will be called Albertans Sick of Stupid Hijinks All the Time or simply, ASSHAT. Easier to remember than WIPA, TBA, RPA, WPP, WEXIT, WLC, et al …
